Abstract
Abstract: something detached from physical, or concrete, reality. It is frequently used of ideas, meaning that they don't have a clear applicability to real life, and of art, meaning that it doesn't pictorially represent reality.
Atomic Twist
Combining the mid century art with the mid balance pieces, I feel works well and I am pleased with the finished result. Something different!
Atomic/Mid Century Art
LIMITED EDITION - It would appear that I am reliving my retro/mid-century era again, which I have to say I simply love, contrary to when I was growing up! It all started with me buying a Fyne Ladye Teak Magazine Rack by Richard Hornby, a 1960's mid-century design on-line that was delivered in person by a very agreeable gentleman. When I was a child, I used to stay with my great-aunt in London, and she had wallpaper similar to that of some of these designs. I also remember getting told off because I coloured in the cats on the wallpaper. And then along came dear Señor Frank, who appears to be quite popular with those taking a liking to my other retro/mid-century pieces.
Canvas Panels
Retro Blue was the first one I did and simply fell in love with the colours, but now feel that the colours in Retro 1970 are perhaps more in keeping with the association one has to mid-century décor. How many of us did not appreciate the furnishings growing up, when it was an era of mixing the previous decades' interior design trends of Scandinavian and Retro with bold colours and clean lines, which I love today.
City Life
LIMITED EDITION: Without the obscure representation of these historical monument sizes, I feel that it would have had an adverse impact on the finished piece.
Country Life
As a child, I loved spending hours playing in the woods, especially in Oving Meadow, which was part of our farm. Being surrounded by trees and nature was something I really enjoyed and still do to this day. While a psychologist might have said it was my way of hiding from the world, it wasn’t then—but today, that assumption might not be far from the truth.
Manhattan Avenue
I thoroughly enjoyed creating these atomic pieces; it felt somewhat like a simplified version of designing the interior of a house. Quite different from my role, that was, as a structural design engineer, and I cannot wait to add to the collection further.
Mid Balance
This series was specifically designed for an exhibition and with the mount board being black too, I found them to be stunning.
Q
The 'Q' series had a very strange beginning. It started with a question mark, which you can still probably see in some of them, but then, purely by accident, I had part filled in the punctuation mark, which I rather liked, so I carried on from there, basically. A perfect piece for a reception lobby.
The Royals
LIMITED EDITION: This was a first for me: caricatures, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and, at some point, intend to do more well-known characters.
The Yacht Race
LIMITED EDITION. When we were children, my father built a boat named Hefzibah, meaning my delight is in her, which was very fitting, for he loved the sea and any association to do with the ocean wave. One of my favourite sounds is the rigging banging against the mast and the gentle water lapping against the hull when moored in the marina.
Time
I used the template from my 'Q Series' for these, which I rotated and then compressed, which created the main part of the time piece. I then added the hour, minute, and second hand.
Vase Of Flowers
LIMITED EDITION - Believe it or not, these started out as utensils in a jar! and after spending ages on the jar, it became more like a vase, so it made sense that I put the utensils away and filled it with flowers!
With Love
The software I use for much of my work allows one to create rather beautiful colours by assigning different blending options to layers. After several attempts at messing about with the blending process, I found that, for me personally, With Love V is one of my favourite. I find the colours very autumnal. A picture that looks good in any setting.
